Photography is a Team Sport

Today I’m proud to launch COLAB: a peer-to-peer professional development community for working photographers who give a damn.

Watch the video and learn more at COLABcommunity.com.

Being a photographer can be an isolating experience.

Whether you’re working full-time, part-time, or hoping to ramp things up, being creative on demand and making money as a freelancer is hard, hard work… and doing it alone sucks.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

I believe photography is a TEAM SPORT.

You’re tired of being sold books, tools and events that don’t actually help you get the answers to your most pressing business questions.

I’ve been at this along time, I’ve listened to—and helped—a lot of working photographers, and here’s what I know:

1. You want to have conversations that matter. Your photography business will grow as you share your experiences with peers and ask questions of photographers you trust. I believe you can fast track your career by connecting with working photographers that have skin in the game.

2. You want advice you can use. Your photography career will thrive when you get professional feedback on your business-building efforts. You’re steering a moving ship; you can cut through the murky waters of the marketplace by having access to expertise when you need it.

3. You want your photography to attract clients. Your photographic talent will strengthen in the context of community. You need fresh ideas and real-time feedback on your visual work, marketing tactics, and sales efforts from photographers who know their stuff and who, like you, give a damn.

That’s my take on things. Well that and this…

YOU have something to contribute.

I know you do. Be it business advice, an encouraging word, or a life lesson that’s helped you along the way, I want to give you the chance to share your knowledge and have meaningful conversations with hard-working photographers.

COLAB Community

What am I talking about?

COLAB is an online community where you can connect with your peers and get answers to your questions in a private, distraction-free environment.

You’re going to love it.

One of the ways Tandem hopes to assist COLAB members in getting the help they need is by hosting Ask Me Anything (AMA) events. Our AMA roster is packed with working pros and industry experts at the top of their game. We already have commitments from professionals such as David duChemin, Peter Hurley, Austin Mann, Lena Hyde, Christine Tremoulet, Dan Carr, Dave Seeram, Griffin Stewart, Kate Densmore, and Adam Blasberg. These connections alone are worth the price of admission.

Why am I doing this?

I want to help you thrive… and I believe the best way to do that is to invite you into a community of like-minded professionals. I’m sick and tired of all the cheap tips and so-called shortcuts out there, and though there’s a time and place for a good book or workshop, I think 24/7 access to a support network is what most working photographers need given the competitive and ever-changing marketplace.

Beyond all that, I’m just one guy. For the past few years, I’ve been unwilling to grow my roster beyond a handful of clients for one simple reason: I don’t want to. Our company, Taendem Agency Inc., is a boutique consulting firm that has stayed small because that’s how we’ve wanted it. From time to time, I have offered one-off Skype consulting sessions for US$250/hour, but I haven’t offered them for months now and don’t plan to again. Outside of my client work, I am pouring my energy into our COLAB community, helping members live the dream… faster.

Given my time spent producing collaborative projects and events, it was a very natural decision to create this community. It makes so much sense to give you a place to connect, be exposed to a wide range of insight, and get the encouragement you need to move forward. I see great value in walking out the various issues together, where everyone can benefit. We all need a sounding board to know we’re not crazy and that someone’s got our back… together, we are COLAB.

What does it cost?

COLAB is just US$50/mo. and you can cancel your membership at any time. Enrollment will close Aug 11th @ 11:59 PM. Learn more (and check out the 14-day trial).
